Capsule for the Day
John 13:1-15 is very dramatic. Every details has a deeper meaning. "Jesus knew His hour has come". "He knew Judas will betray Him." Notice "know" is used in the past tense, which means He had full knowledge of what was before Him. But He still shared a table with Judas and even fed Judas.
He could have killed Judas before Judas betrayed Him, but that would have been too cheap an act. He let evil run its course. For He knew evil lasts for a time and then it destroys itself. So, there was no need to fight evil. Rather, He had to keep doing good; stepping low and washing feet.
The gesture of washing feet is powerful. It is about reconciliation. For we are already clean through baptism. But we pick up dirt along the way, dirt that makes us betray Him like Judas. Instead of fighting us, He stooped low, reconciled us. And He commands us to do the same.
