Capsule for the Day
"And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to myself" (John 12:32). The "I" in the text is Christ. The "earth" is literally earth and also symbolically all that is not of heaven. It isn't just a place, but a state of rejecting God and all that is God's: love, forgiveness, hope, joy....
Christ entered the earth. He entered the heart of hatred, indifference, envy, bitterness, anger, hostility etc. He bore all that wasn't of God. He felt the shame. But like Hebrews 12:2 puts it, He endured all for the joy set before Him. Thus, He becomes for us, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
He draws all men to Himself because He went through all that is not of God and still remains of God. This makes Him the Hero, a Victor in the Great story of redemption. For when all was considered lost, He arose. Thus, He stands out, drawing us into a life of Victory. His-story becomes our story.
