Capsule for the Day

We have all sort of fears: fear of failure, fear of losing a loved one, fear of rejection etc. Of the many fears, the fear of rejection is often very devastating. It makes it difficult for us to come to terms with the reality. Thus, we begin to indulge in all kinds of things in order to be accepted.

Jeroboam in I Kings chapter 12 to 13 is a victim of the fear of rejection. Out of the fear of being rejected by his subjects, he forgot the promise God made him. He turned against God and made a gods for his subjects. He felt by doing this, he would be accepted. Unfortunately, he wasn't.

This is very typical of fear. In many cases, fear lies. It doesn't tell the whole truth of what is happening. It deceives us into letting go of our source of strength and security. In the case of Jeroboam, fear led him to reject God, His strength. And by rejecting God, he rejected himself.
