Capsule for the Day
I Samuel 4:1-11 leaves us with many questions. The Israelites were "the chosen people of God", the Philistines were not. Why would God allow the Philistines to defeat the Israelites? Besides, the Israelites carried the Ark of the Covenant into the battle ground. Why were they defeated?
Why did God not fight for the Israelites? He could have at least stopped the Philistines from taking the Ark of the Covenant. Where was God? If He was present as He claimed, why did He not act? He was present. He acted. He acted as God, not as the Israelites presumed He would act.
Prayer doesn't change God and make Him do what we want. It changes us and make us do what God wants. Perhaps if the Israelites had prayed and waited on the Lord, they might not have engaged in that battle. Like Christ in Mark 1:35-39, they would have discerned God's will and let go.
