Homily - Daily Capsule - Fr Francis Afu

Capsule for the Day

Blessing is a household word. We wish each other blessing. People of faith use the expression "may God bless you". In Numbers 6: 22-27 we are instructed on how to call down God's blessing on ourselves. "May the Lord bless you and keep you"... Blessing is an important ritual in Judaism.

Christ picked up the theme of blessing and He uses it the miracle of multiplication of loaves. He even admonishes us to bless those who curse us and do us harm. At the Last Supper "He took bread and blessed it..." To say the least, our whole life is about blessing. So, what is blessing?

Blessing is the manifestation of God's grace and mercy. Grace being God granting us the favour we don't deserve. Mercy being God freeing us from the punishment we deserve. So, when we wish someone blessing we are wishing God's grace and mercy. And blessing begets blessings.
