Homily - Daily Capsule - Fr Francis Afu

Capsule for the Day

Not long from now, the Almighty will come to us as a child. He will not be born in a palace where everything is orderly but in the mess of the manger, where chaos is the order. He is a child which means He is vulnerable. He needs to be carried, nursed and loved. The Almighty God is "in need".

This doesn't appeal to our sensibilities. He contradicts our expectations and challenges our life-style. For all we know, the manger isn't safe or secure for adults let alone for a child, the One who is the King of the world. But the very sight of the manger calls us to silence, to wonder, to worship.

What is happening here? Why Bethlehem? Why the manger? Why come as a vulnerable child not a conquering hero? We don't get it. He is near us but we can't see. We can't hear even with the silence. The noise of our expectations prevents us from hearing the mystery wrapped in the manger.
