Capsule for the Day
St. Paul makes a big ask in 1 Thessalonians 5:16 "rejoice always". Wait a minute! Does he know the reality of human struggle, pain and frustration? At least he could have asked us to rejoice when it is good, ok or safe. But to say rejoice always is kind of insane or insensitive to human reality.
But it was bold of St. Paul to ask us to rejoice always. For all we know of him, he wasn't one who comes across as joyful. So, why would he ask us to rejoice always? There is only one reason we can find, the Christ-Child. He knew the reality of humanity, but He still become human.
For He knows the reality of pain and struggle doesn't defines us. What defines us is His ability to turn our reality into His reality. So, since He has done that in the resurrection, we are now defined by His victory. Thus, we can rejoice always, for we know Christ's victory will reign in our reality.
