Capsule for the Day

Conscience is a commonly used word. We hear people say "leave it to their conscience". But what is conscience? Conscience comes from two Latin words "con" with and "scire" know. In simple terms, conscience means "with knowledge". Knowledge in the sense of the Logos, the Word.

The Logos is the Christ, the Word, the Knowledge of the Father and the Wisdom of God (1Cor. 1:24). To act according to one's conscience therefore means to act with the Knowledge of the Father which is Christ. So, to act according one's conscience demands that we act with the Word - Christ.

But this isn't the sense in which we understand conscience. We often think it is acting according to one's subjective knowledge. And it is where we miss the mark and find ourselves restless. Thus, with Christ we act with right conscience, and with right conscience we are at peace.
