Capsule for the Day
Mark 1:7 is very counter-cultural. It doesn't seem to appeal to our sensibilities. "He who is coming after me is Mightier than me; and I am not fit to undo the straps of His Sandals". First, it speaks of humility which acknowledges the limitation of man and the Profound Greatness of God.
John had the stage. He had the whole town of Judea and the surrounding districts turn up to hear him and they believed him. He could have claimed to be the Messiah. But he chose to draw the attention of all to the Christ. This is freedom - being who we are without trying to be who we are not.
There is no freedom without humility. This is where John the Baptist confronts our contemporary sensibilities. He was free because he could acknowledge who he was without any pretence of being who is not. More importantly, he could acknowledge the Christ is Mightier than him.
