Capsule for the Day

I love this line from St. John Paul II "You are call to be saints, don't waste your life being anything less". First, this is a challenge. Or better put, it is a wake up call to many of us who go through life thinking sainthood is for "a bunch of holy Joes". Truth be told, we are called by God to be saints.

Like every call, we have a choice. We can choose to answer the call or ignore it. Whatever the choice we make, we will definitely pay a price. The difference however is that the price we pay to be saints profits us for salvation. It transforms us and enables us to participate in the Life of Christ.

Christ's Life? The beatitude comes to mind here. Blessed are the poor in spirit, that is, those who are poor of the self but full of God. This first beatitude is the foundation. Until we are poor of self, we can't mourn; we can't be merciful; we can't be saints. So, to be saints, we have to "be poor".
