Capsule for the Day

When we read Haggai 1:1-2:9, there are three lessons we could draw from the text. The first lesson is the disadvantage of self-preoccupation. Sometimes we get so preoccupied by our own cares and worries that we don't care about others. Notice: the Israelites paid for self-preoccupation.

The second lesson is the benefit of giving. When the Israelites realised they were self-preoccupied, they chose to give their attention to God. And that changed everything for them. A people that was once disadvantaged became a people of great advantage: the promise of God.

The third lesson is patience. We need patience to experience the fulfilment of God's promise. For God's promises aren't fulfilled in our own time and space. They are fulfilled in God's own time, which many a time is difficult to wait for. St. Theresa of Avila is right "patience obtains all things".
