Homily - Daily Capsule - Fr Francis Afu

Capsule for the Day

In today's Gospel reading, the question isn't how many times should I forgive my brother, but why should I forgive him. It is a question of quality not quantity. It is a question of repentance. It is a question of gratitude. It is a question of security. Where am I standing? Who's got my back?

To appreciate why we forgive, it is important to flip the coin and consider why we don't want to forgive. Often, it is because of insecurity. We aren't sure what the other, my brother is up to. We hang on to wrong done us as a means of security. For if we were truly secure, we would readily forgive.

The security in context isn't just physical security. It is the security Paul spoke about in Roman 14:7-9 "alive or dead, we belong to the Lord". It is the security that comes from the fact we have been forgiven far more than we have been wronged. It is the security of appreciating God’s forgiveness.
