Homily - Daily Capsule - Fr Francis Afu

Capsule for the Day

I live in a country where people generally obey the law. One can't just do what he or she likes without facing the consequences of the law. Road users understand the implications of breaking a traffic law. The beauty of this system is people are free, safe and at peace when they obey the law.

The reverse is always true, people are scared, imprisoned and troubled when they break the law. So, while the law comes with its burden of not doing what one wants, it also set us free from a bigger burden of a nasty, brutal and chaotic society. This is true of secular law as it is true of Divine Law.

The greatest of the Divine Laws is "you shall love the Lord, your God with all your heart... and your neighbour as yourself". This law, when obeyed, sets us free and it leaves us at peace. The consequences are obvious when we break this law. So, God's law doesn't enslave us, it actually makes us free.
