Capsule for the Day

Suffering, anguish, excruciating pain have their place in life. They are like the sun that warms the ground and causes the seeds in us to grow. Our lives, like Jesus puts it in parable of the sower is a seed-ground. What grows out of the soil depends on the quality of the soil and the seed.

Without the sun (suffering, pain...) many good seeds like hope, patience, holiness cannot grow. The letter to the Hebrews puts it this way "Jesus learned to obey through suffering". Through suffering Jesus did good and also revealed the Good He is. We too can do good through our pain.

True religion doesn't demonise pain nor deny suffering. It accepts suffering as part of our reality. Christ Jesus gave suffering a new meaning by going through suffering Himself. No pain, no gain! But it isn't just any pain that brings gain. It's pain borne with Christ and for Christ that's gain.
