Capsule for the Day

The story of the two disciples on their way to Emmaus is symbolic. First, the disciples left the Holy City, the City of Peace, Jerusalem for the City of Battle, Emmaus. Jerusalem wasn't just a city for the Jews and Israelites, it was totemic. It represents their identity, their story and their future.

To leave Jerusalem for Emmaus was like leaving life for death. But that is what happens when expectations don't match reality. The two disciples were disappointed that the expected Messiah wasn't the Messiah after all. He died. He allowed Himself to be crucified by the Romans! Scandal!

Ordinarily, one would have expected Jesus to abandon them just as they abandoned Him in Jerusalem and set off for Emmaus. But Jesus crossed the barriers of their disloyalty... He came to them... He has come to you.. though you may not have recognised Him, He is there, walking with you.
