I am a Sinner
Pope Francis has a way of inspiring people. He called the whole world to pause and reflect when he said, "I am a sinner". Those words made a deep impression on me. They came at a time when I was struggling with my own sinfulness. I was so ashamed of myself. I couldn't understand why I would confess a sin and then commit the sin again.
At that point, I felt it was useless going to confession. I was really ashamed of myself. Unfortunately, the more I felt ashamed of my sin, the more I found myself committing the same sin again and again. I continued in the sin until I stumbled on Paul's words "give thanks to God in all circumstances, for it is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus".
Paul was right. By thanking God for all things, even for my sin, I came to realise the goodness of God. His goodness, His forgiveness is the light that helped me to overcome my sin. For thanksgiving begets humility. Ingratitude begets pride. It is pride that makes us ashamed and unrepentant. Humility, on the other hand, helps to repent of our sins.
