After Our First Date....

For many, religion is all about rules, rituals, traditions and sets of beliefs. There is no romance, no affectivity, no warmth. It seems heresy to use romantic language to speak of God and religion. But when we read the Scriptures, we find more and more a contrast with this popular mindset. Religion is about relationships; God wooing us into marriage.

God isn't just the Father, He is also the Spouse, reaching out to His beloved. Jeremiah puts it this way, "the Lord seduced me, He seduced me and I fell". Besides, the whole of Scripture is a love story. It is a story that begins with a first date, a first encounter and grows into a marriage. In Ezekiel 2:8-3:4, we hear of what happens after a first date.

The makeup fades and we come to see the other as he or she truly is. There is one thing that keeps the relationship going from that point - Trust. We have to trust the one we love. It was trust that made Ezekiel to eat the scroll even when he knew it was about lamentation. He trusted his lover God, and with trust, "the scroll tasted as sweet as honey".
