Fruits of Discernment

Discernment is about seeking the Lord. It is about finding out what is of the Lord in any given circumstance. It is easy when we let go of our own will, and allow ourselves to be surprised by the Goodness of the Lord. A good image of discernment is cattle chewing their cud. The cattle re-chew the cud to bring out the moisture, the hidden nutrients.

In discerning a matter like hurt, we recall the feeling over and over to get the root cause of it and to find out "where is the Lord in all this? What is He asking of me?" The Lord is always there. He is in the person who hurt you as He was with those who crucified His Son. He is also in you feeling hurt as He was with His Son on the Cross. He is God with us.

"If He is with us, with you in your pain, what is He asking of you", my spiritual director would say. "He is asking what His Son asked of Him, 'Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing'". To forgive, we who are hurt have to experience freedom from the bitterness of hurt first, only then can we set free the one who hurt us from theirs.
