Capsule for the Day
Wisdom 1:13 is very definitive. "Death was not God doing", it says. This leaves us with two questions: what is death? Where did death come from? In the context of the passage, death is the absence of life. This raises another question, what is life. Life is Christ. Christ was definitive when He said, "I am the Life". Notice, He used "the" not "a".
So, we are dead when Christ isn't part of us. For instance, Bede and Jodie were a great couple. But Jodie ran into difficulties that threw the couple into crisis. Unfortunately, the first thing they gave up was their prayer, and then they gave up on God. They rejected God, and they were left with no life of forgiveness. Their marriage died. They died.
So, where did these difficulties come from? Wisdom 2:24 says they come from the "devil's envy". Do you remember the story of Job, how the devil was envious of him? He made things difficult for Job, tried to turn him against God, to disconnect him from the source of life. But Job defeated him by seeking and waiting on God. And Job lived.
