Homily - Daily Capsule - Fr Francis Afu

Capsule for the Day

We live in a time when godlessness is spreading like wild fire. Many people live without any recourse to the Transcendent. Life seems to begin and end in humanity. Humanity defines what is good and evil. Since there seems to be no place for God, it's logical to say there is no place for mercy. "Mercy is weakness. It isn't the attitude of the time".

But this time isn't very different from Jesus' time. Everything that exists now, somehow reflects what had existed. Same kind of human questions, same kind of human struggles, and man's inhumanity to man. Mercy has always been countercultural, the healing balm. Jesus calls us to healing when He said "Happy are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy"

This Beatitude challenges the very core of humanity. It challenges our idols and our culture of godlessness. Mercy humbles us, and puts us in our place: "we are not God. We need God". Mercy finds us, leads each and everyone of us to God. And when we are in God, we become new creatures, creating a civilization of mercy. For God is Mercy.
