Capsule for the Day
"When tenderness is detached from the source of tenderness, the logical outcome is terror" (Flannery O'Connor). When we replace tenderness with love, the quote will read "when love is detached from the source of love, the logical outcome is mere sentiment, an expression of feeling that can't stand the test of time. Love loses its art of self-giving.
John was aware of the importance of the source of love that is why in 1 John 4:7-10 He stated clearly "love comes from God". And he goes on to explain what he meant by love: "It is not our love for God, but it's God's love for us when He sent His Son to be the sacrifice that takes away our sins". This love is real. It has the cross as its centre.
It is the love that is more than being nice and gentle. It is also tough, brutal like the cross. It is the love that is good, but found in the midst of mess and imperfections. It is the love that is poor, mourns the evil, hungers for justice. It is the love that is patience, doesn't keep records of wrong. It is the fruit of our friendship with God, the source of love.
