Capsule for the Day
In Leviticus 24:20, we find what is known as the Law of Talion. This law states that punishment must be commensurate to injury done. Moses legislated this law as way of restricting the strong from unduly punishing the weak. Thus, we have an eye for an eye, tooth for tooth.
But Christ revoked this law with the radical law of forgiveness. It was radical because it departed totally from the culture of hate; the culture that enabled violence. The wisdom here is we cannot overcome hatred by hatred. We can only overcome hatred by forgiveness, by love.
Thus, Christ established a civilization of love. Love that wills and becomes the best for the good of self, the other and God. This love includes that which is good and wholesome, and excludes that which is evil and destructive like anger that births hatred. It stops the vicious circle hatred.
