Capsule for the Day

Mother Teresa of Calcutta is remembered for her famous line "peace begins with a smile". A smile mends breaches and builds bridges of peace. A smile comes from a soul that is together, at peace with oneself and is able to be at peace with others. A smile is ignited by the beauty in others, in oneself and in the world. Beauty attracts peacemakers.

We sow peace because we want to preserve that which is beautiful in us. For the absence of peace destroys the beauty, breaks the bond, steals the smile and leaves us orphans. Peace ensures we are fathered, that we belong to a family. This accounts for the beatitude "happy are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God".

But being a peacemaker doesn't guarantee we will be loved by all. It doesn't also promise we will be without troubles. In fact, we find that for Christ, the Peacemaker, it was the opposite. He was hated, despised and rejected. Peace comes with a price. It was only after paying the price that the Centurion professed, "this truly is the Son of God".
