Capsule for the Day

Poverty isn't something we crave for nor wish for one another. We often pray that God should deliver us from poverty. Scripture says, "He, Jesus Christ, became poor that we may be rich". In other words, He doesn't want us to be poor in the literal sense. He wants us to be rich, to increase... If He wants us to be rich, why did He say "Happy are the poor"?

Is Jesus saying one thing and demanding of us another? "The poor" in the context of the Beatitudes is an attitude, a way of life Jesus expects us to live. What does He mean by "the poor"? Matthew tries to qualify it by adding "in spirit". We can understand what "the poor" means by looking at Jesus' life. He was poor of His own "will" (Not my will...)

"The poor" are those who are poor of all that is contrary to God. It is a kind of poverty that makes us rich in the true sense of the word rich. It sounds paradoxical,  but when we are poor of our own will, we begin to do the Will of Him who created us for happiness. We begin to key into His purpose for our life. Thus, we become free and grow to be happy.
