Capsule for the Day
First Thessalonians 5: 12-28 is rich with words of wisdom. It begins by calling us to respect those in authority. It goes on to urge us to be patient with all and in a special way to help the weak. In verse 15, Paul asks us not to return evil for the evil done us, but always seek to do good to all.
It becomes very challenging from verse 16ff. "Rejoice always", he exhorts. "Pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you". Why would I accept for example: betrayal, the death of my loved one as the will of God for me in Christ Jesus?
It doesn't make sense. This isn't wise at all. But it all begins to make sense when we get to verse 24 "He who calls you is faithful, and He will do it". What will He do? He will do what He alone as God can do in circumstances that aren't favorable. So, we can count on Him by thanking Him.
