Capsule for the Day
Aristotle was once asked, "what keeps friendship together for life". He answered "friendship is kept for life when two friends fall in love together with the Transcendence". He goes on to qualify the Transcendence with the Good... He didn't use God. Instead, he used the Transcendent Good....
Fr. Patrick Peyton picked up Aristotle's theme and christianised it. "A family that prays together", he said "stays together". Why is the Transcendence, in our Christian setting God, the key to a long lasting relationship? The answer is engraved in us. Our whole being longs for God.
And only God can satisfy that longing. The effect of that satification is the manifestation of the Kingdom values: forgiveness, reconciliation, healing, restoration... For these values transcend human wants, fears and anxieties. They bind the bonds of friendship and keep them for ever.
