Capsule for the Day
One of the enigmas of Christianity is the death of innocent children instead of Christ. It is easy to ask why would God allow children to die in place of Christ. But we miss the point with that line of reasoning. The story isn't about the "injustice" of God, but the fear and insecurity of man, Herod.
Ordinarily, an innocent child wouldn't pose a threat to any of us. But when we are insecure and afraid, we could easily make decisions that have grave consequences like Herod ordering the killing of innocent children. So, the story of Herod reflects our story of insecurity and fear.
On the other hand, it also reflects the power of God over evil. Although evil can do its worst, God has the final say; that human wisdom and might can't outdo the wisdom and strength of God. Herod tried, but he didn't succeed. No one can destroy the plan of God. This should be our hope.
