Capsule for the Day
The book of Exodus opens with the awful reality of jealousy and envy. The Egyptians couldn't stand the fact that the Israelites were being favoured by God. The Egyptians oppressed and enslaved the Israelites. But the story didn't end in slavery. It ended with God setting the Israelites free.
But God didn't set them free for the fun of setting them free. He set them free to enter into a covenant relationship with them; the covenant at Sinai. He made them His chosen people, and demanded of them worship. They were to know Him as "I Am Who Am" and obey His commandments.
This demand God made of the Israelites wasn't just for His self-gratification. It was for the good of the Israelites. For when the Israelites worshipped God and obeyed His commandments, they were free, they were at peace in their land. This is also true for us. True worship sets us free from our slavery to sin and evil.
