Capsule for the Day
Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. How is the heavenly Father perfect? Matthew tells us "He let the rain fall on good men as well as bad men, the honest as well as the dishonest". His perfection is not that of distancing Himself from the bad, sinners, but reaching out to them.
He even earned the title "friend of sinners". Not friend of the righteous. Ordinarily, one would have expected our Perfect Father to distance Himself from us as the pagans gods do. But our God chose to dine with sinners. He even obliged us to let the wheat and the weed grow together.
Thus, the command "be perfect" is a call for us to live like our heavenly Father: to love the good and the bad, to reach out to all and not to distance ourselves from some... but to build bridges etc. It is a perfection of loving our enemies, those who hurt us as He did on the cross.
