Pilar of Salt
Genesis 19:17 has a clear and simple command: "Flee for your life; don't look back or stop anywhere in the valley...." For where God was asking Lot and his family to flee from was the land of Sodom and Gomorrah. It was a land soiled with sin. Like all sins, the sin of the land of Sodom and Gomorrah had consequences, which annihilated the land.
But God commanded Lot and his family to flee. He considered it unjust for them to experience the consequences of the sin of others. While Lot and the other members of the family harkened to God's command, his wife didn't. As a result, she became a pilar of salt. That is, she became a pilar that seasons the lives of others, a lesson for us to learn.
Now, the lesson is simple. We all have a past like Lot and his family. The temptation for many of us is to keep looking back to see what is happening to those who made our past ugly and unbearable. But God wants us to flee from it, to look forward and to keep going. For the more we look back, the more we are drawn into perpetuating our past.
