The Original Good
A lot has been written and said about Original Sin. But very little is said about Original Good. St. Irenaeus talks about Original Good as the Original Justice. Justice in the sense of God giving us our due - "the love of the Father". He goes on to define Original Justice as the covenant relationship between the Father and all of creation - I will be your God.
He supports his definition by pointing to the Scriptures. Every narrative points to the Father pouring out His love and reaching out for a relationship with creation. This accounts for a strong filial language as "I have loved you with an everlasting love". "Even if a mother forgets her child, I, the Lord, will never forget you". "... this is my beloved Son".
The Father's love is our due. But what is God's due? Our free response to His love. So, before the fall, when Adam and Eve responded freely to His love, there was peace, Shalom - total wellbeing, which was the fruit of Original Justice. This accounts for Ephesians 2: 14-16: "Christ restoring us to the Original Justice and making for our peace".
