Capsule for the Day
I love reflecting on Hebrew and Roman names. They are either theophoric or they are bearing a mission. When the mission of a name is accomplished, God gives a new name that announces the new mission. For example: Peter (Rock) was called Simon (the one who listens); and Paul (little) was called Saul (the one who asks of God).
Now, let's look at Peter and Paul. For Peter, his former name Simon proves that he was teachable; he was docile and he accomplished the mission of Simon when he heard Christ's call. Thus, the one who listened became the Rock, on which all "listeners" are to assemble. Saul, the one who asked to conquer Christians was conquered by Christ.
Thus, Saul, the great scholar was made Paul, little, so that Christ will be big in him; and he can preach the Crucified Christ, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. Who would have seen all this coming? Only God, who knows each of us by name and has a plan for us. Like Peter and Paul, God alone knows our new name. Let's wait on Him.
