Capsule for the Day
"To Timothy my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord" (2 Timothy 1:2). Paul is really on to something deep here. He is leading young Timothy to the profound truth that grace, mercy and peace are gifts from God. They are given to us without our merit. They are forever with us as God is with us.
This understanding was revolutionary then as it is now. For many believed grace, mercy and peace were rewards earned by a selected few. Thus, there was unhealthy competition that led many to turn their focus away from God to themselves, to their actions. Timothy is to be free of this and so should we. Our focus is to be on God who is Father.
Father means source. So, when Paul said "from God the Father" he is obviously saying from the Source. "Christ Jesus our Lord" challenged the powers of the time. In other words, Christ is Lord. He is In-Charge. He is the One that gives you these gifts. He is the One you are to worship. Don't be enslaved by any other lord because you want these gifts.
