Capsule for the Day
Normal is overrated. However, no normal human being likes trouble or takes pleasures in conflict. We all want calm and a peaceful condition. Peace is the craving of every normal human being. The world hungers for peace. Society has systems in place to safeguard peaceful coexistence. We have developed conflict resolution programmes.
But there is more to peace than the absence of trouble or conflicts. Peace in the context of the beatitudes is the freedom to be in spite of the reality confronting us. It is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. We find this in the early Christians. They were at peace even in the face of trials and persecution. Their trials didn't hinder them from being Christians.
There are stories of how peacefully they walked to their execution. Their attitude of peace captured their executioners and many were converted. This peace is possible when the Holy Spirit is at work. It is the peace that comes from being forgiven by the Father and being able to forgive one's enemy. It is the peace that frees us from the fear of death.
