St. John Paul II warns us against two strong temptations: the temptation of self-worship which bears the fruits of self-indulgence and the temptation of reducing the human person to an object, a means to an end. Both temptations come from two lies "the human person is the measure of all things, and truth is a hindrance to freedom". Very convincing!
These temptations aren't new. In Galatians 5 Paul speaks of the fruits of self-indulgence, which reflects the reality of the first temptation. The Christian community at the time of John's Gospel also noticed the ravaging effects of the lies that lured many away from the truth. Thus, the Holy Spirit, the Advocate was sent to lead to them to the whole Truth.
Today, as we celebrate Pentecost, we encounter the Advocate who defends the truth that every human person is loved into being by the Father and each of us is an end not a means, creatures not God. He guides us to the whole truth as it is revealed in Jesus Christ. He instructs us that the Truth, Jesus Christ is the foundation of true freedom.
